A Weekend in Matsumoto on the Japanese Alps...

Saturday,2nd October 2010

Although pakdokter's trip to Japan was with the intention of to be with and spend some time with Rastam, he was so busy with work that pakdokter hardly saw him during his working days. He left for work at 9 am before pakdokter woke up and returned home at 1 am in the morning when pakdokter had already naturally slept..
The only time pakdokter could have to be with him were on weekends.
The second weekend there we booked for a weekend trip to Matsumoto in the province of Nagano. This province is located to the north west of Tokyo and was the venue of the Winter Olympics some years ago. The Japanese Alps run through this province.
We headed for Matsumoto, one of the famous tourist cities in the Nagano Prefecture. It could be reached by train in two hours and thirty minutes. The "Super Azusa Express" was not as fast as the Shinkansen or Bullet Train, but still it was as fast, if not faster, than the KLIA Express from KLSentral to KLIA Airport. The fare for the three of us totalled 20,000 yen ( RM 720).
What were there to see and do in Matsumoto? Well, the city itself was pretty like Kyoto and the highlight was the Matsumoto Castle. There are many 'onsens' ( thermal baths) if one likes these therapeutic soaks and the surrounding hills and mountains have many jogging and trekking circuits. In winter, of course, there would be many skiing slopes.
The train ride out of Tokyo first went through the suburban towns but soon ascended up the mountains crossing lovely gorges and streams and beautiful villages. You also go through wheat farms and vineyards.
