The Java Jazz Festival 2011: The Jakarta International Expo Centre at Kemayoran..

The JI Expo Centre at Kemayoran, Jakarta Utara, is a sprawling complex of auditoriums, exhibition halls and open ground that could easily host and accomodate major meetings, exhibitions or a musical festival like this Java Jazz Festival. In summary, at any one time, during this Jazz Festival, there would be 16 concurrent concerts staged in closed door halls, exhibition halls and open-air stands put up at various places of the Expo ground. Pakdokter could not imagine where in Kuala Lumpur we could put up a similar show. The KLCC Convention Centre is obviously not adequate. Perhaps the Expo Centre planned by the Naza Group near the MITI/Matrade Complex would be designed to cater for such big motor and other trade exhibitions as well as musical festivals like this.

Pakdokter is also impressed at how the Indonesians have embraced the IT technology. Buying tickets for this festival on-line was a breeze. The 3-day pass for entry to most of the concerts only cost about RM400. Special concerts like the Santana Show, the George Benson Shows cost around an additional RM 120 each. Pakdokter and gang booked all the 'special concerts' ( a total of 5 altogether) and they cost each of us about RM 900 each ( inclusive of the 3-day pass).

Once booking of the passes and special tickets were confirmed and online payment made, the tickets could be printed out immediately and these print-outs with their bar-codes were your tickets for entry which were verified by the scanners at the gates. There was no more any need to queue up to change for tickets at the venue. In KL, if pakdokter purchased any ticket for a show at the MPO ( Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra Hall) or at the Istana Budaya - pakdokter would still have to go to the ticket booth to collect the ticket proper before the show. Such a waste of time and a duplication of work.

The central courtyard of the complex was converted into a trade exhibition hall and a foodcourt. The BNI Bank - one of the sponsors of the event - sold the bank's debit card for use in purchase of food and drinks and other items from the various trade booths. Due to the large number of people, this service hit a snag as their computer lines were jammed causing massive delays in crediting these debit cards. Otherwise, Indonesia has proven that they have moved much ahead of us in terms of embracing this IT services.
