Cinque Terre ( 1V) : Monterosso...the Monaco of Liguria..

Saturday, 3rd July 2010

It would take at least another one to two hours to walk to the next village of Vernazza. We all agreed that we had had enough of exercise ( even Alejandro admitted that he had never doen this walk in summer) and decided to descend to the train station and hop on the regular train service connecting these villages. We passed Vernazza (which looked very pretty from the train) to head on to Monterosso as it was fast approaching 1 pm. We were all feeling quite hungry by then.

Monterosso has a long and flat stretch of a sandy beach and is obviously the favourite holiday town of Cinque Terre. The whole stretch of the beach was jam-packed with holiday makers sun-bathing or swimming in the water.
If these folks were to discover what our beaches at Dungun, Cherating, Redang and Perhentian are like, they would all be saving every cent to come to our shores....

it was so hot that this kid's mother
poured cold water on him to cool down...

mussels...
deep-fried sardines....

local pasta..
we had our lunch at a seafood trattoria
run by ?Tunisian emigrants...

the village church..

We headed back to the train station at 3 pm, took the 20 minute train ride back to La Spezia and drove back to Siena which took another 3 hours. Pakdokter was glad that we had ventured out to this part of Italy which is not in the usual tourist itinerary of packaged holidays.
