After visiting the Hawa Mahal, the tour took us into the old city through one of the 9 ancient walls. The first stop within the old city was the Jantar Mantar, or the Observatory, built by Maharaja Sai Singh 11. He had also built a similar but smaller observatory in the Mughal capital of Delhi.
The complex consists of 14 geometric devices for measuring time, predicting eclipses, tracking star locations as the earth orbits around the sun.
The largest instrument, the Samrat Yantra ( world's largest sundial) plotted time of the day to the accuracy of 2 seconds of local Jaipur time.
After about one hour at the Observatory, the group was next taken to visit the City Palace of Jaipur. This complex was also built by Maharaja Sawan Jai Singh 11. It covers a wide area divided into gardens, courtyards and buildings. A part of the complex is still todat the residence of the former Maharaja family.
The complex comprises several buildings like the Chandra Mahal, The Mubarak Mahal, the Mukut Mahal, the Maharani Palace and the Shri Govind Dev Temple as well as the City palace Museum.
The Diwan-I-Khas is a hall for private audience. It has 2 large sterling silver vessels on display - reputedly the world's largest sterling silver vessel).
one for zoom shots and one for wide angle photography....
