Jaisalmer (11): Walking the Streets of Jaisalmer...

Sunday, 7th March 2010

Walking along the narrow streets of Jaisalmer Fort was very much like walking the narrow streets of the Imperial City of Fez in Morocco. All along the streets, there are shops selling colourful textiles and souvenier items and crafts. One also gets to peep into some of the residential homes along some of the streets.

The group was first taken to visit a Jain Temple. Since pakdokter had visited a similar temple in Khajuraho, this was given a miss. Then the group was taken to visit two 'havelis' - these are residential homes of rich merchants and ministers of the Maharajas. These havelis are still occupied by descendents of the families and parts of the havelis have been turned into museums as well as shops selling textiles and crafts.
