The Mien Tribal Community were originally from China. Most of them escaped to Chiang Rai during the communist revolution and had originally agreed to leave for Taiwan after some time. But later on the Thai government had agreed to let them stay on provided they take up the Thai language and culture and adopt Thai names. They settled down as Thai citizens - many have become successful businessmen and owning land and farms.
The other predominant Chinese tribal community is the Hmong who originally settled down in Laos but also escaped to Chiang Rai during the communist rule in that country.
The Mien village we visited was of interest as there were some houses there still built with mud walls as in the old days.
