After returning from Laos we drove past another old Thai town (? Mae something, the name of which pakdokter has forgotten and would require a little research to recollect it). The town was one of the regional royal capital and has so many old temples and ruins that would be an archeological pleasure. Unfortunately the earthquake that hit Burma last year had also destroyed many of these ancient ruins and most of them are closed for repairs and reconstruction. The town shares a similar design as old Chiang Mai - with a moat encircling the city wall. Some of the old city wall could be seen as we drive through the town.
Peter, our guide, suggested we visit the local market instead of the ruins which turned out to be just as interesting. Fresh and live fish from the Mekong are on sale and local cookies, fruits, nasi campur, etc made quite an interesting visit. What struck pakdokter was how similar the Thai markets are to local markets at home.
