Pakdokter's neice, Nurul Ayn, was married today to her long-standing boyfriend, Arshad Zafri. The simple and sweet 'akad nikah' was held at her home - the family house where pakdokter lived in for a good many years of pakdokter's growing up life. The house has now been taken over by pakdokter's youngest sister, Rauna.
The akad was attended mostly by family members and very close friends of Nurul and Arshad. Nurul's father, Anwaruddin, carried out the 'akad nikah' recital - very much the same way pakdokter's late father-in-law had carried out the 'akad ceremony' in pakdokter's own wedding 33 years ago. The main difference today, Nurul was present out there during the ceremony - whereas in the past ( at least in pakdokter's case) pakdokter's partner was in a seperate room, oblivious of how the ceremony was conducted. The present practice is definitely more proper as the bride was there to hear the 'marriage contract' being recited and to listen to the virtues and responsibilites of and in marriage. Pakdokter's only reservation was in the way the young Kadi ( probably in his innocent way to try to calm down the groom) made jokes when he listed what the couple should do and expect of and for each other. In emphasising that the wife should be obedient to her husband - she must always agree and obey her husband's wishes and although it may have been a joke ( and correct by law) he had put it to Nurul that should Arshad wants to take another wife, she should also agree to it?..... True he was not making a serious pronouncement about it but too much of a joke like that especially when reading out a 'contractual' pronouncement of duties and responsibilities of marriage, drawing out laughter from everyone else appear to pakdokter to have trivialised such a serious 'event'.
One wonders if a supposedly 'solemn' ceremony is being made to become so light-hearted and to be laughed about - perhaps that may be one reason where and and why we see these days so many married couples divorcing so easily and quite often so fast after their marriage.

and this is the first reunion for us since then....
Zainal is maried to Arshad's paternal auntie.
