Oviedo University

Thursday 5th June 2014

After lunch we decided to go and look at the Oviedo University as recommended by the tourist attendant at their office near Park San Francisco this morning. We walked through the City Hall arches along a street in the direction of the Cathedral. Half-way along we found the University.

The Oviedo University is the only (public) university in the Asturias. It has 3 campuses in Oviedo, Gijon and Mieres.

Established in 1574 under the will and terms of the Archbishop Fernando des Valdes Salas  ( who was the General Inquisitor under King Philip 11) - the university started with a Faculty of Arts through which all students have to go through before moving on to study Theology or Law.

It was invaded and occupied by the French troops in the war in early 1800. Socialist revolution in the 19th century burnt the university down as it was considered to be a bourgeois symbol. Rebuilt after the Spanish Civil War it is now a leading university of the region.
