Oviedo

Wednesday, 4th June 2014

Oviedo is the capital of Asturias. The train trip from Llanes to Oviedo took about 3 hours. The train station was big compared to previous stops we made from Bilbao. As usual our bags were taken to the hotel in three taxis while most of us walked to our hotel located on one of the main streets of Oviedo.

The Kingdom of Asturia was formed in 720 when the Visigothic aristocrat Pelagius revolted against the Moslem Spain who occupied most of Spain since 711. Oviedo was largely uninhabited until 2 monks - Nolan and John - founded the city in 761.Pelagius who revolted against the Moors died in 737 and Alfonso who replaced him started a dynastu to last the next few hundred years. Oviedo was started with only a small church but Alfonso developed it further to match the city of Toledo.
