A Weekend in Penang (1)

Pakdokter chanced upon this hotel in a review that appeared in one of the newspapers. Checking out its website - pakdokter decided to drive up for a weekend in Penang - and also to drop by to visit pakdokter's eldest brother as well as the children and grandchildren of pakdokter's late eldest sister.

Hotel Penaga on Hutton Lane - within the heritage enclave of this city - was reported to have been restored by Malaysia's very own top architect - Hijas Kasturi. He was lucky to have been able to acquire these shophouses which enabled him to restore them into this chic 40-room boutique hotel with a central courtyard.

The design and style is very much Chinese/Peranakan - and many of the tiles, furniture and fittings - pakdokter was told - were collected from Vietnam, China and Java.

When pakdokter checked-in, lawyers from ZICO were also there for their Exco meeting. It was nice to meet some of them whom pakdokter had known through their founding Chairman, Zaid Ibrahim.
