Day 2 : Dinner at a local Muslim Restaurant...

Day 2: 27th June 2011

Our guide, Ms Liu, having been told how ''not so pleasant" our experiences had been thus far, took us to a so-called famous Muslim Restaurant in Kunming. It turned out that this was the same restaurant that pakdokter came to during the first trip to Kunming many years ago when some of the golfers' spouses could not eat anything and retched and nearly vomited outside the outlet in reaction to the smell of the surroundings and the dishes being prepared at the restaurant. As pakdokter had reported in the first post of this series, the 'stench' in the vicinity of the restaurant then was not unlike that of the 'non-halal' meat section of our old Central Market of pakdokter's childhood days.

Pakdokter must say it here though that things have improved. That 'odour' was no longer detectable and that part of the city has also undergone a lot of development and transformation. Even the number of disabled 'amputees' who loitered around and begged to our kind hearts were noticably much less.

The hostesses at the door still wore white and red outfits which came out of the '1001 Nights of the Omar Khayyam' book. Ms Liu told us that Muslim cuisine is very popular in Yunnan because it is spicy and tasty and this could be believed because this relatively big restaurant was quite full with diners.

The pictorial dishes could be glanced at via an electronic tablet - quite high tech - probably taking the lead from many restaurants in Tokyo. However several of the dishes we wanted were not available and fish was definitely expensive in this part of China! It was 200 yuan per kilogram ( RM 100 per kg).

pakdokter studying the menus which came in a computer tablet....
Ms. Liu was behind pakdokter helping out with the translation...

and the waitress dressed like a low cost carrier stewardess....

grilled/barbequed lamb on metal skewers...
the seasoning was spicy and acceptable....
the lamb pieces were thin and half of them were mostly fat....
and they were pricey......

this was a beef stew of sorts.....
red and dangerously spicy and oily.......
and probably the signature dish of the province...

after being ascertained that the fish was fresh and live from the tank...
this fish was steamed with ginger and soy sauce at the instruction
of our own ( personal and travelling) chef, Dr Ahmad Ravee......
and the bill for these 3 dishes and rice and tea came to RM 300.....
so much truth about the hyperinflation
being talked much in TV Business programmes...
