The Dali Old Town was much smaller than the Lijiang Old Town but certainly had an older look than Lijiang. Lijiang suffered the damage from an earthquake more recently and becaue of the reconstructions and rehabilitation - the whole town looked 'new'. The Dali Old Town also was hit by an earthquake but many more years ago - so despite some reconstruction, it has not lost it's 'old' character......
Maggie told us that whereas Lijiang is 800 years old, Dali is 1100 years old. It was once and for a few hundred years the capital city of the ChongSheng Empire. The capital was later moved to Kunming until today.
