Day 3 : The DongBa Museum..

Day 3 : 28th June 2011

Just outside of the park we were taken for a visit of the DongBa Museum. DongBa is an ancient religion of the Naxi community. The Naxi is an ancient community of Burmese/Tibetan origin but upon invasion and conquest by the Mongols and other subsequent invaders, they were driven south of Yunnan. They practised an ancient religion and beliefs and had their own language and writing system very different from the Chinese writing. Theirs is a pictograph/heiroglyphic type of writing - one of the few known pictographic/heiroglyphic writings of ancient times like that of the Egyptian and the Mayan/Aztec communities of South America.

During the "Cultural Revolution" the communists attempted to destroy this religion and culture - books on their language and religion were burnt and their cultural practices prevented. This museum put up an exhibition of their ancient language, their history, their religious belief systems and culture.
