Our guide in Lijiang - Ms Tina @ Wang Yan ( meaning beautiful goose) - is 32 years old - graduated from the prestigious Kunming University in Hospitality and Tourism. She spoke a more fluent English than our guide in Kunming city and was definitely more hardworking than the other. She stayed on with us - walking us through the streets and lanes of the old city until past midnight!
Ms Beautiful Goose belongs to the Naxi community - about 300,000 of them remaining in the region around Lijiang. Their ancestors practised the DongBa religion and wrote in their own distinct pictograph/heiroglyphic writing.
Ms Beautiful Goose came from a formerly rich local family - the communist Cultural Revolution nationalised their properties and her maternal grandmother was hanged in a public square. Many of her relatives escaped to Taiwan. As pakdokter had earlier reported - there was a detectable resentment when Ms Beautiful Goose became comfortable enough to relate her personal family history to pakdokter.
Ms Beautiful Goose reported that Lijiang receives 10,000 tourists a day! 95% of them are domestic tourists mostly from the richer cities on the eastern coastal seaboard. That must be the reason why English language was not widely learnt and spoken as the demand for English to deal with foreign tourists was still small. Pakdokter thinks this will change soon as with the opening of a new International Airport, Lijiang would definitely soon see an influx of foreign tourists.....
Ms Beautiful Goose posed for pakdokter at the shoe shop....
lunch with us at a friend's restaurant....
she must be a tourist from the eastern coastal city
pakdokter caught her 'stealing' shots of pakdokter with her
SLR Canon camera using a zoom lens from a distance...
she must have thought that pakdokter was a handsome Naxi native....
pakdokter pulled out pakdokter's camera like a cowboy and
she instinctively gave pakdokter this 'professional pose....'.
