Day 1: 26th June 2011
Pakdokter first visited Kunming maybe 6 or 7 years ago. It was a golf tour with the STAROBA group. Pakdokter remembers Kunming as a dusty industrial city with a yet to be developed infrastrucutre. Food was a major problem - the Muslim Restaurant we were taken to in the city was a 'culture shock' to some of us. The smell in and around the restaurant was like what one encounters at the 'non-halal' meat section of the wet market. Pakdokter cannot forget the sight of one of the golfers spouse who retched and retched outside the restaurant without being able to eat anything. Only our subsequent stay at the golf resort on the mountains of Spring City helped the day for us. The golf resort was developed by a Singaporean company and the chef at the place was a Malaysian. So we could get even mamak mee goreng there......
Pakdokter's second trip to Kunming was with the Royal Lake Club Golf Tour. We bypassed Kunming and went up straight to the Spring City - if pakdokter remembers correctly. So we escaped the 'culture shock' of the local cuisine.
So pakdokter had prewarned pakdokter's partner and our two friends as to what to expect if no change has taken place over the years.
From the aircraft pakdokter could see that Kunming has also undergone a massive transformation as in other parts of China. The city now is filled up with tall highrises and multi-level highways ringed the city. Remnants of the old industrial quarters could still be identified amongst the new residential and commercial developments.
somewhat dusty and foggy although away from the desert
must be from industrial pollution and automotive fumes....
