The Edinburgh Festival (1): The Sights of the Street Festival...

The Edinburgh Festival is an annual event, the one this year started from the 5th August 2009 to end on the 5th September 2009. One has to be here for some time to actually realise how massive this Festival is!
There are hundreds if not thousands of activities taking place every day of the duration of the Festival at every available location of the city. Every lecture hall of the colleges and universities, every meeting rooms of the hotels, were converted into theathers where dramas, plays and stand-up comedies were performed. Every church became concert and dance halls and gardens and courtyards became venues of book or craft exhibitions and festivals. The main streets of the city became a hive of activities for street performers.
Now pakdokter can understand why Edinburgh is known as the 'Festival City'. The presence of tourists from continental Europe in big numbers bears testimony to the recognition given to this Festival....

the invisible man....stood in front of a door along the Royal Mile...

the Ninja in tights promoting his comedy act along the Royal Mile....
the 1 hour 3-men act from Tokyo performed at a venue in a makeshift
theatre under a bridge called the 'Cave'....

another group of artistes promoting their play along the Royal Mile...

this bus was a venue for stand-up comic acts....

even little kids had programmes catered for them....

On Monday, August 17th 2009, pakdokter and partner walked to the ECA ( the Edinburgh College of Art) which was a short 10 minutes walk from our flat. There was a massive stone art exhibition on the college compound and several plays and comedy acts were performed hourly every day from mid-morning to late night. We saw a Shakespeare's play' 'the Tempest' performed by a group from the college. We later walked to the Edinburgh University and managed to see a 1 hour one-woman drama on the life of the rock singer Janis Joplin.
