Miri (1): Jazz in Miri....

Pakdokter went back to Miri this weekend for the Miri International Jazz Festival. This event has been a regular feature in the Sarawak Tourism Calendar for the past 5 years and has been attracting increasing attention from the local and international jazz enthusiasts. Its venue has been on the grounds of the ParkCity Hotel (previously the Miri Holiday Inn) and this year's event saw the participation of 8 jazz outfits from Indonesia, Thailand, Brazil, Europe and the USA.

The overall atmosphere of the Festival was quite reminiscent of the 'Pesta' days at the UM in the 70's with food and craft stalls spread out on the hotel garden fronting the sea and the band-stand taking one side but with several High Definition projections of the performances being put up at several locations to allow you to view the shows if you were not keen and up to standing with the crowd in front of the stage.

The highlight of the 2-day Festival was the performance by the James Cotton Band, James Cotton being one of the musicians who have gained recognition in the list of the 'Hall of Fame of Jazz Musicians' in the US. The band of 5 musicians gave a thumping performance of 'blues' which made the crowd go wild......
