Barcelona Nov 2004 - Sagrada la Famillia

The Sagrada Familia Cathedral is the most amazing building of the city. It was the last and greatest work of the architect, Gaudi, who died by ?suicide in 1926 before it could be finished. It has left Barcelona with a controversy - some people wanted it to be completed while others argued that it should be left as it is and become a park dedicated to Antonio Gaudi.
The cathedral first architect - Francesc Villar -concieved it as a neo-Gothic structure and work began in 1882. He completed the crypt where there is now a small museum. Gaudi took charge after that and decided to do something different. There was a central tower rising some 600 feet and 3 facades with other towers dedicated to the Virgin, the Evangelists and the Apostles. In his time only one of the 4 towers was completed. The other towers were subsequently completed by others.
