Barcelona November 2004

As pakdokter did not travel for the whole month of November 2011 after a tiring and hectic October going up and down to Bali and Jakarta - pakdokter spent some time looking at old travel pictures and decided to upload to this blog shots taken from pakdokter's last trip to Barcelona in 2004. Pakdokter had been to this beautiful city perhaps twice before this - both for psychiatric conferences - the trip in 2004 was actually the first stop on the way for a holiday in the southern French town of Perpignan just across the Spanish border.
Barcelona was first visited and inhabited by the Phoenicians and the Greeks but the founding of the city was credited to the Carthaginians and its name was thought to have been derived from the powerful Barca family. It later became an important Roman port and then a Visigothic capital before falling to the Arabs in the 8th century. Charlemagne wrested it back from the Arabs. In the follwoing centuries the counts of Barcelona expanded to take part of southern France and the Pyrenean fiefdoms.
Barcelona was the centre of the Catalan seperatist during the Spanish Civil War 1936-1939.

Placa de Catalunya....one of the main landmarks of the city..
