Bilbao was originally just a small village of fishermen until the Old Quarter with its 3 original streets was built around a walled area by the Estuary. On what was a little shrine this Cathedral was built dedicated to St James ( San Iago in Spanish). This town is located on the main route of the Camino de Santiago ( The Way of Saint James) for pilgrims who walked from France to Santiago de Compostela to pay homage at the shrine of the Apostle - and this church was a transit for the pilgrims on their long walk to Santiago de Compostela.
It is built in Gothic style While we were there, we managed to witness a wedding with the newly-weds being celebrated by a troupe of Basque dancers as they walked out of the cathedral..
