Casco Viejo ( The Old Quarter) of Bilbao

Bilbao Old Quarter was built some 700 years ago with only 3 streets,. The community living on the east bank of the Estuary ( River Nervion) were mostly workers of iron foundries due to the many iron mines located on that side of the river. The folks living on the west bank were mostly in commerce and shipping. The Old Quarter was surrounded by a wall but as the town grew bigger the walls were torn down to make way for more streets which rose to seven. Casa Viejo ( also called La Siete Calles) means Seven Streets which is a reference to the number of streets in this quarter. Apart from the Old Town Hall, other important buildings here include several churches, the market and Teatro Arriaga. Today this is the place for bars, cafes and restaurants. Many of the designer labels have also set up shop here

Below are some shots of the streets in the Old Quarter. It was drizzling with light rain on a cloudy afternoon and there was not much crowd in the town
