Palais Royale and Comedie Francais

29th May 2014

Directly across the Rue de Rivoli facing the Louvre is the complex of Palais Royal.  It was originally called the Palais Cardinal being the residence of Cardinal Richelieu - upon his death it was given to the King and hence became called the Palais Royal. Famous for its beautiful central garden where grand banquets and parties were held - today it houses the Ministry of Culture, part of the National Bibliotheque and the corridors of the building today houses showrooms of French designer labels, cafes, boutiques and tourist shops.

The Palace complex also has two theaters - the Palais Royal Theatre being the first was home of the Music Academie and Opera and the second theater built at a later time to replace the first has, after the French Revolution become the Comedie Francais Theater.
