The first itinerary of the Northern Spain Tour was a visit to a train museum in Azpeitia. It took about 90 minutes by bus to reach the museum.
Railway service came to Spain much later than the rest of Europe. Fearing that Spain could easily be invaded by its European enemies by train - Franco decided that Spain should have a narrow-gauge railway line so that no European train could enter Spain into Spain directly as their railways are of a wider-gauge than that of Spain.
Azpeitia is a small town between San Sebastian and Bilbao. The train museum is in a sprawling ground showcasing a collection of old locomotives and coaches from the time Spain first had its own railway services. As part of the tour we also had a chance to ride on a steam-locomotive train to a nearby village, Lasao, and back.
