A Half-Day Out in Cefalu...

Monday, 28th June 2010

Our driver cum tour guide on Monday was a tough-looking lady called Alessandra. She claimed to be the only lady taxi-driver out of the 10,000 or so taxi-drivers in the whole of Sicily and she drove the 8-seater Mercedes taxi-van like Micheal Schumacher ! She would have delivered us to Cephalu, located about 100 km or so to the west of Palermo in 30 minutes if not for the traffic jam along the highway caused by an overturned truck!....
Cephalu is a sea-side resort town on the northern coast of Sicily. The narrow cobbled-stone streets were lined with many touristy shops and restaurants.

views of Cephalu from the approach road...

narrow cobbled-stone lanes lined by shops and restaurants...

the square in front of the cathedral..

during the Arab rule this cathedral was a mosque..
very little evidence of Moorish designs were left
after the Normandy Christian rulers took over the island..
water from a natural spring was used for bathing
and washing clothes during ancient times here...

these baths and pools have very cold water..

the above scenes of this popular beach were
taken from the sea-food restaurant where we lunched..

pakdokter wanted to have lobster for lunch..
but it cost 145 Euros per kg......!
so we settled for black ink pasta and grilled calamari....
