Rematch : An Old Score to Settle...

About 60 golfers took part in this year's President Cup - perhaps the attractive prizes valued at RM15,000 being the drawing force compared to the monthly medals which drew an average of 40 golfers only.

The game, played at the Impian Golf Course in Kajang, was played on the stroke-play format. Pakdokter and Ahmad Khalid ( from batch 1964) had requested for a rematch against Shahidan Razak and Hamid Shafie ( from batch 1966) - we played against each other at this same venue in the same competition last year and the junior pair in the end won the closely fought match. AK and pakdokter would like to redeem our defeat and made the special request for this replay which the committe had generously obliged.

Shahidan, Hamid Shafie, Ahmad Khalid and pakdokter..

Our flight played form hole no 14. Being more senior, pakdokter's pair was given the honour to tee-off first. Pakdokter's drive was long and straight and landed smack in the centre of the narrow fairway. AK hit an equally good drive and was about 5 yards in front of pakdokter. Shahidan was surprised especially at pakdokter's drive and remarked that pakdokter must have been practising a lot for this duel. " This is not the same pakdokter anymore....." he remarked.

Shahidan hit an equally strong drive but it went right into the first cut. Hamid tried very hard to match but only pulled his drive to the left which looked like having gone into the deep bunker. Withthe good start, pakdokter and AK were hopeful of giving the junior pair a beating. Alas both AK and pakdokter forgot that our RSGC course is generally flat. Impian is a hilly course with undulating terrain throughout. And the greens were slow compared to RSGC. Pakdokter duffed the second shot with the utility club, sent a long 3rd and got the 4th into the front bunker. Coming out of the sand for a 5-on in the par-5 hole 14, pakdokter 3-putted for an 8. Shahidan reached the green in 5 and putted in for a 6. Luckily AK, whose 3rd went into the bunker, got out for a 4-on and 2-putted for a 6 to equal Shahidan.

In reaction to pakdokter's hopeless outcome, Shahidan delivered the following pantun for pakdokter.........

apa guna berkain labuh...

kalau tidak bertumit tinggi...

apa guna tee-off jauh...

kalau tak dapat pun double-bogey.....

Although pakdokter and AK put up quite a commendable fight - we lost out to Hamid Shafie who took full advantage of the 10 strokes he had off AK. We lost out to them 4-balls in the first 9, would have lost more in the second if not for AK coming back in the last 2-holes to take the dommy after having lost the match at the 16th hole.

The only consolation for pakdokter was to win the nearest to line prize at hole No.4 - pakdokter's drive sent the ball to just 3cm from the central line. In response to Shahidan, pakdokter recited to him the pantun below....

apa guna berkain labuh....

isteri orang jangan di main....

apa guna tee-off jauh...

kalau jauh dari line......

Hamid Shafie in action...
