Happy Birthday, Rastam....

Thurday, 23rd September 2010

Pakdokter arrived at Rastam's apartment at around 10.30 pm, Wednesday night - that was after having had a quick dinner at one of the many restaurants at the underground streets of the Keio Shopping Mall. By 11 pm Rastam phoned us up to say that his company's servers have been hacked and he and his team had to stay back at the office overnight to sort out the problem! Rastam only came home at 9 am Thursday morning, and pakdokter and partner were both still soundly asleep!

The 23rd of September was a public holiday for Japan - the day of the Equinox- the day summer moved on into autumn. And what a change of season it was. It was as hot as in KL the day before - the day that pakdokter arrived in Tokyo - and it was raining all day long on this day of the Equinox. And the temprature had dropped down to mid-20's also!

As Rastam was thoroughly exhausted from the sleepless night all three of us decided to sleep in the whole of Thursday!

the harira pea soup...
the beef cous cous...

the boquerone (anchovy ) tajine....

the paella mariscos....

We braved the rain that night with our little brollies and walked to Ekoda - a short 20 minutes walk away fom Rastam's apartment where we celebrated Rastam's 28th birthday at a Spanish/Morroccan restaurant called 'the Al-Andalus'.

We had 'harira' ( a Morroccan pea soup) to start and a main course of a baroquenos tajine ( anchovies tajine), a paella mariscos ( a seafood nasi goreng Spanish style) and a beef cous-cous ( another Moroccan staple ). The cook at the restaurant was a Morroccan who had been living in Japan for 13 years. He had been chef at many Spanish restaurants all over the city. We shared our own experience travelling in Morrocco, and he was surprised that we had been to many parts of his country.

And, to Rastam, 'Happy Birthday and Many Happy Returns to You, Son.....'
