Gran Via de Don Diego Lopez de Haro

31st May 2014

Leaving the Bilbao Feve Station - we decided to check out the shopping district of Bilbao. ( we located this street from the city map we took from the hotel). On the way we passed by the Plaza Espana with a monument of ( the founding father of the city?) in the centre of the square. Many cafes are found around this square.

The main shopping street of the city is the Gran Via de Don Diego Lopez  de Haro - the founder of the city. We found the El Corte Ingles Department Store here - Spain's biggest chain of shopping mall. Many other buildings housed Zara, Mango and other designer labels shops. The Provincial Council of Biscaya Building is also located along this lane.

It is a broad avenue lined by trees that provided shade from the sun with beds of colourful flowers along the sides of the avenue. Many benches along the sides for you to rest your tired legs.

most of the villas along this street now are homes to Banks or Designer label stores

the street is shaded  green with trees and decorated with flower beds

We had to meet our tour leader at the hotel at 6pm. So my partner had to limit her shopping time at El Corte Ingles. Walking back to our hotel we passed by the book exhibition stalls taking place at the square in front of Teatro Arriaga. Joggers and bicycle riders aplenty along the Nervion banks and the special lanes made for the riders.

book exhibition but all books were in Spanish

 skate-boarders shared the bicycle lanes
