The Istiklal Kaddessi is one of the main shopping street which starts at the Taksim Square and ends at the Galata district. When we visited Istanbul the last time about 5 or 6 years ago, we stayed at a hotel located along this street.
The street is a pedestrian mall - with only the tram running on it - carrying passengers from Taksim Square to Galata. From Galata there is a funicular train going down to the Galata Bridge.
