Chiang Rai Day 2 : Mae Kok River Cruise (2) : Karen Village

It took about 45 minutes on the boat before we arrived at our first stop. The Karens were originally from Burma - they emigrated to the Chiang Rai region some 80 years ago after civil strife and oppression by the Burmese military junta. They were originally Buddhists? but today are mostly Christians who have provided schools and healthcare in their villages thus converting them all into the new faith. As it was a Sunday - the village we stopped at looked deserted as most of the folks had gone for the Sunday morning church mass.
