Day 4: Shangrila....the old city of Zhongdian

Day 4: 29th June 2011

We arrived at Zhongdian, the capital town of the Shangrila province at around 5 pm but it was still bright and sunny as in mid-afternoon. Mr Wang Da took us to the Zhongdian Old City - a city much older than Lijiang - 1300 years old. It sits on the ancient silk-tea route and was an important trading centre. Being quite close to the Tibetan border - the architecture of the buildings in the old city was more Tibetan than Chinese - or as pakdokter's partner who has been to Bhutan said - the town reminded her of Bhutan.

Zhongdian Old Town is less 'comercialised' as the old town of Lijiang. Most of the shops were either tourist shops, restaurants or motels and inns.
