Day 5: The Shangrila Pudacuo National Park. To the Highest peak at 4300 metres

Day 5: 30th June 2011

From the Militangya high-mountain pasture ground, we took the next bus and started to ascend to one of the highest peak of this section of the park. Only about one third of the park was open to the public. The highest peak open to the visitor at this section was at an altitude of 4300 metres. The air became quite thin and one could get breathless quite easily on walking. Pakdokter's group had taken 'Diamox' - the antidiuretic which would prevent altitude sickness. If one stayed long enough at such a high altitude - brain anoxia ( lack of oxygen) can cause swelling of the brain from water retention manifesting in severe headache, vomiting and mental confusion. All the local domestic tourists had bought and brought along small one little cannister of oxygen and they intermittently breathed in oxygen from their oxygen cannisters. Pakdokter and gang were lucky to get away without needing the oxygen cannisters. Perhaps the 'Diamox' had helped....

at higher altitude more pine forests were seen...

the Shudu Lake seen from 4300 metres above sea level..

these pictures were taken from the bus..
we were not allowed to alight from the bus at this altitude

perhaps to minimise time at high altitude as prevention from 'altitude sickness'..
