The STAROBA-KOBA Invitation is a 3-day Ryder's Cup format golf competition which was first started in February 2011. Each team was made up of 20 golfers. On the first 2 days the game was played on a 4-ball-best-ball-partnership match-play format and on the final third day the game was played on the individual-match-play format. Handicaps were adjusted daily based on the preceeding day's score and the individual-matchplay pairs were determined at the end of the 2nd day by means of an auction of players by one team captain to the other. All this made the strategies of each team one hell of an excitement!
The 1st edition was played in Jakarta - the 1st day at Cengkareng, the 2nd at Pondok Indah and the final day at Cengkareng again. It ended in a draw and each team went home with the prize money of 50 million rupiah.
The 2nd Edition was played at the Giri Gahana Golf Resort in Bandung. All the 3 games were played there and KOBA's tactic of changing the tee-box from where we played everyday worked for them. We played from the blue tee on the first day, the black tee on the second and the golden tee! for the third day. STAROBA who came with a formidable team was easily trashed by KOBA. Despite the loss, the STAROBA team was still rewarded with a 20 million rupiah prize money.
The 3rd Edition was held in Bali. The matches on first 2 days were played at the beautiful Nirvana Bali Golf Resort. STAROBA came with a few new stronger players to try and avenge the Bandung defeat. It turned out to be a closely fought game. Pakdokter and pakAzman played in the last flight to come in at the New Kuta Golf Course on the third day - and with each of us delivering 1 point each with our victories against our respective rivals, pakMesha and pakErik - we were hugged and kissed by the other players as our wins managed to save the day for STAROBA. The event ended up in draw giving each team a share of 50 million rupiah of the 100 million rupiah total of prize money.
The STAROBA-KOBA Series has become a great 'team-buiding' exercise for the executives KOBA who were brought in from its various tin mines scattered all over Indonesia. For STAROBA - apart from further cementing our long years of camaraderie - this also gave us golden opportunities to play at great golf courses in Indonesia and an opportunity to earn a little 'pocket money'.
The 4th Edition was rushed up to beat the approaching month of Ramadan. As STAROBA was 1-down in the 'Series' thus far, the CdM (Chef-de-Mission) pakRoslanChik decided to 'buy' some strong players from ASAS ( Alumni Sekolah Alam Shah) for an undisclosed 'transfer fees'. So STAROBA came to Jakarta for the 4th Edition with some new strong players - pakBob Baharuddin and pakSheikhFeisal @ Arab from ASAS, pakMihdzor who had years of experience studying many golf courses on his helicopter, pakSalehudinHisham @ Anjang - a strong hard-hitting player who could not come for the 2nd and 3rd Edition because his 'visa' was not approved apart from the others who have been regularly in team like pakdokter for reasons only known to them and to the CdM.
