Day 5: The Shangrila Pudacuo National Park: The Militangya High-Mountain Pasture

Day 5: 30th June 2011

After about half an hour of fresh air at the shores of the Shudu Lake we hopped on to the next available bus and stopped at the Militangya high-mountain pasture ground. Several nomadic tribal minority homes were found at this region and their 'yaks' and other animals were observed at different spots of this vast grazing land.

One of the local minority tribal community here is the Mo-zu tribe. This community practices polygamy - both for the men and women. Their women-folk may have 4 or 5 husbands - some of the men may even be siblings from one family. Sometimes it was difficult to even identify who the father of her child is! However despite of this this marital arrangement works with little jealousy or conflict. As the husbands usually travel about hunting for food, quite often a different husband would be at home at any one time. In such a way conflict out of jealousy or 'possesiveness' are avoided. In fact this arrangement ensured the woman/wife of a husband to protect and keep her company at all time. It is not uncommon for a man to also be the wife of several sisters of one family.
